Employment Relations Board

The Employment Relations Board was established on the 27th December 2002 when the Employment and Industrial Relations Act (CAP 452) was enacted. This tri-partite Board is composed by:

  • an independent chairperson appointed by the Minister responsible for industrial relations
  • the Director General responsible for Employment and Industrial Relations who shall act as a Deputy Chairperson
  • four representatives of workers nominated by the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development from amongst the representative workers’ organisations sitting on the said Council 
  • four representatives of employers nominated by the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development from amongst the representative employers’ organisations sitting on the said Council
  • three other persons appointed by the Minister responsible for employment and industrial relations
  • three observers appointed by the Minister responsible for industrial relations representing the government, workers and employers respectively

The functions of this Board are  to make recommendations to the Minister on regulations concerning  working conditions and to advice the Minister on any matter relating to conditions of employment or on any matter referred to it by the Minister. This Board also has the power to co-opt non-voting members and to appoint sub-committees.
